Join us at the very spot where Dr. King spoke 61 years ago for opening remarks, tributes, and reflections from community leaders . This commemorative moment honors the legacy of the Freedom Now Rally & sets the tone for the day’s celebration
The King's Market Pop Up Shops: Support local Black-owned brands at The King’s Market. A curated pop-up shopping experience featuring everything from handmade goods to apparel, art, wellness products, and more. Located along the Lancaster Avenue Corridor.
Live Performances and Dj'ing: Experience the rhythm of community through live music, spoken word, and cultural performances happening at both 39th & 40th & Lancaster. The day will feature DJs, dancers, and artists honoring the legacy of MLK through movement and sound
avenue of the eats food Truck lineup: Savor the flavors of the diaspora at Avenue of the Eats. a vibrant lineup of Black-owned food trucks serving soul food, Caribbean bites, vegan plates, and more. Brought to you in collaboration with Katika Black Business Directory.
Dream Builders Kids Zone:
A vibrant, family-friendly space for our youngest community members. From arts and crafts to games and hands-on fun, this space encourages imagination, learning, and joy. Centering youth connection, creativity, and community care.
freedom now rally art exhibition: A powerful exhibition honoring the spirit of Dr. King, the 1965 Freedom Now Rally, and the legacy of civil rights in Black Philadelphia. This installation features works that reflect on memory, movement, and Black liberation
'KING ON THE AVENUE' FILM SCREENING: Step inside a pop-up theater and experience a short film and archival footage that bring Dr. King’s 1965 visit to life. Curated by Scribe Video Center, this screening space honors movement-building through cinematic storytelling.
MEDICAL SCREENINGS AND RESOURCES: Stop by for free hair and scalp exams, medical screenings, and emergency prep resources. Plus, don’t miss the Freedom Now Fit Party hosted by Body Rock Bootcamp to kick off the weekend with high-energy movement and motivation.

Explore a visual timeline of the neighborhood through the eyes of legacy residents. This open-air photography installation honors the past and present of West Philly’s Black Bottom community, offering a look at what has changed & what still remains

July 27th, 1965
The 1965 Freedom Now Rally Tour was a series of campaign stops by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in major Northern cities, including Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, Newark, New York, and Boston to fight segregation and inequality.
August 2nd, 1965
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. arrives in Philadelphia and meets with local leaders and organizers, laying the groundwork for mass mobilization and continued civil rights action in the city.
August 3rd, 1965
At 40th & Lancaster Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his Freedom Now Rally speech before more than 10,000 people, calling for equality, economic justice, and voting rights. During his visit, he also supported protests led by Cecil B. Moore outside Girard College, advocating for desegregation.
August 6th, 1965
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson, banning discriminatory voting practices and enforcing the 15th Amendment. Fueled by nationwide organizing and advocacy led by Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders, the law marked a major victory for the Civil Rights Movement and expanded access to the ballot for Black Americans across the country.
